History of the Temple (Sthala Perumai/ Puranam)
History says that the Lord Chandra has twenty seven stars as his wives. All wives complained about Lord Chandra’s partiality to Lord Shiva. Hence Shiva cursed Chandra to get constant changes in his shape (decrease and increase in appearance). Hence, Lord Chandra worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple to get redeemed from his curse. Besides, Lord Chandra got the nice chance to reside in the head of Lord Shiva in Crescent (shape of 3 day Moon) shape. As per the order/ words of Lord Shiva, Lord Chandra helps his devotees whoever worships in this temple to get salvation/redeemed from Chandra Dhosha for their peaceful life.
Navukkarasar sang a song, “ondrokolam” on Lord Shiva while saving a snake bitten child from death. There was no death so far by snake bite in this village. It is still believed that the dip in the holy water here helps to get healing from many unknown diseases including leprosy.
In the month of Panguni,on Uthira natshathra day the rays of the Sun and the Moon falls on the Linga in the temple is special here. Further pooja is performed only once in a day in the temple. The grace and blessing of goddess, Perianayahi removes all our misfortunes in life through our worship in the temple.
Moreover, the devotees use to feel great joy by looking into the gracious face of the Goddess, Periyanayahi. Devotees go overwhelmed to end in tears out of some unspoken delight. Kailasa Nadhar (Lord Shiva) of this temple guides His devotees to get great height in life with fame. The Devotees of Lord Ezhumalaiyan worship Lord Chandra in the temple for their prosperous life through their redemption out of Chandra Dhosha.
On Mondays, worshipping of Lord Chandra by reciting the Chandra Gayathri Manthra at 108 times one gets Chandra Dhosa Shanthi Pariharam. Not only this, Ashtothra Archana and Asaveri Raga Keerthanai regarding Lord Chandra gives salvation/redemption from Chandra Dhosha.
