Significance of the Temple: Lord Shiva appears here as Dhashinamoorthy and He blesses his devotees. Every Thursday is special here and it is believed that the devotees get complete blessings of the God through their worship for their good health and wealth in life. Lord Jupitar (Guru) worshipped the God of this temple, Abathsahayeshwarar as His devotee. Lord Ganesha (Vinayaha) in this temple blesses with the name, Kalangamal Katha Vinayagar.

Third Thursday in Masi (Tamil Month) Month is considered as the worshipping day of Maha Guru in this temple. Guru Peyarchi (Jupitar Transit) day (the position change of Guru graha from one Rasi to the other) is celebrated grandly in this temple. The God of the temple has been raised by his own in lingaform to call Him Suyambu Lingam
History of The Temple:
The Tamil Spiritual poem, Devaram was recited in this Temple. In the process of getting Elixir, the first product, so called poison, Aalahala Visham was consumed by Lord Shiva in order to save both the Devas and Demons. Then, it is believed that Goddess Parvathi devi who saved Lord Shiva from swallowing the poison by holding His neck to stop the poison in the neck itself without entering into the body. Therefore, Lord Shiva appears and blesses His devotees in this temple with the name Abathsahayeshwarar (savior of suffereings).
Sirukanpeelai is the plant of this temple and considered as herb.
It is seen around places in and around Thiruchirappalli. People of this region generally use the plant, peelai during the time of Pongal Festivals while performing pooja at home. Now a days, it became a money bringing crop. It is popular in the market due to the knowledge of its medicinal values.
It is also seen widely in Pudukkottai district. In this district, the people keep this as pooja item during the days of Pongal festival.
Every Thursday, the temple door remains open for the worship of its devotees. It is said that nobody died in Alangudi by snake bite. Sthala (Temple) Moorthi (God) and Theertham (holy ponds) are very special in this temple.
It is considered as a temple for Guru Dhosha Parihar. People worship the God to overcome the negative effect of Guru Dhasha.
